My Vegan Chocolate "Frosty" Recipe

About two years ago I started seeing a recipe float around Facebook that claimed to make a vegan version of a Wendy's Frosty.  It used cocoa, almond milk, bananas, ice, and a couple of other ingredients that I can't remember right now. At the time that I came across the recipe I was not consuming any dairy or soy, so I was hopeful and excited to make myself a yummy treat.  In my opinion, the recipe was an epic fail.  I was so disappointed when I tried it.  I even tried tweaking the measurements and it still tasted awful to me.  I'm not going to lie, I became determined to make a yummy, chocolate tasting dairy free and soy free version of a milkshake and it became somewhat of an obsession.  I tried several different variations and after two years I finally have almost perfected a vegan version of a Wendy's Frosty at home.  I am excited to share it with you!

For this recipe you will need:
- blender
-vegan chocolate protein powder
-approximately 1/2 frozen pear cut into slices or cubes
-approximately 1/2 frozen banana cut into slices
-8oz of vanilla sweetened coconut milk

To make this milkshake or "Frosty" first add the coconut milk to the blender, then add the vegan chocolate protein powder, frozen pear and frozen banana.  I use Dutch Chocolate pea protein by Now Sports that I purchase using Amazon Prime.  A half a scoop works great for me but you will need to adjust that according to your taste and diet goals.  Some people are looking for ways to add additional protein into their diets and this certainly a great one!  Blend well and enjoy!  The pear gives it a thick consistency and using only half a banana rather than a whole one means that you can't taste banana over powering the chocolate.

If you find that your shake isn't thick enough then add a little more frozen pear or decrease the amount of coconut milk next time.  I have made this several times and I have never needed to add more pear and reblend.  Each time I have made it it has been thick , creamy, and delicious.  I have to use a milkshake straw to drink it but it could also be eaten with a spoon like soft ice cream.

Please try out this recipe and let me know what you think!  Also be sure to follow us on Twitter and Like us on Facebook!

My Favorite Sports Bras

I am passionate about fitness.  That's why I incorporate it into my daily life, and that's why I became a Beachbody coach!  I talked about my opinion of the Best Workout Pants Ever not long ago, but what's also important are your undergarments while working out. I started wearing sports bras during 10th and 11th grade track practice.  I don't think I wore them for over ten years after and just threw out those same gray cotton sports bras just last year!  Gross!  I only remember there being cotton sports bras in black, white, or heather gray.  Maybe that's why I thought they all fit the same too!  When I started to work out in Sept 2013, I went to Target and got some size small sports bras off the sale rack, gray and black but stretchy wicking fabric this time.  The more I studied fitness, the more I saw fashionable and colorful sports bras worn by females in fitness.  Also, the more I washed my two rotating sports bras, the wider the elastic band got, and the day I tried to jump rope for the first time since the elementary school playground was the day I realized my sports bras were doing nothing for me!  I went back to target and tried on an XS.  I jumped up and down in the dressing room a time or two and noticed I may as well have been wearing nothing!  Despite the loose fit, I almost called for help when I couldn't finagle my arms out of the thing and both arms were stuck over my head constrained by this elastic that was so tight, yet held nothing in place when it was fully around my torso.  I eventually maneuvered it off and left the store empty handed and exhausted from the workout I had jumping and trying to get out of this contraption.  Let me correct myself, I never leave Target empty handed, but I had no fitness apparel in my bags this go around.

That's when I did some observing and some internet browsing, and a lot of trial and errors ensued in dressing rooms across the tri-county area.  There was no way I was going to feel confident in my workout clothes allowing me to be able to focus on form and mentally prepare myself to work toward reaching my fitness goals if I felt like I may or may not appear on the next People of Walmart's site while working out.  Game on.  I also didn't want my daily hard work to be healthy and fit, which is luckily accompanied by a better body, to only add gravity to my chesticles from cardio moves.  Defeating the purpose is not in my game plan to get fit!  I would not stop until I found the best sports bra.

I have a narrow torso, and a short torso and shoulder area.  It's funny I have had this body over 30 years and didn't know I had short shoulders, I guess I'll call it!  Even if I found a secure elastic band under my girls, I had no support because the straps were too long so to say.  I realized I had to find adjustable straps.  Adjustable straps that are thick enough to not dig in and leave shoulder marks?  Did they even exist? I needed XS straps with a S cup area.  I didn't need top overflow like the XS provided.  Forget about bending to pick up a weight in that outfit or quadraboobs appeared creating a butt under my chin.  Just call me a busted can of biscuits but way up under my chin.  I try not to create reasons for people to stare at the gym of all places.

Along with the best compression leggings of all time, Victoria's Secret's innovations took the lead again!  I purchased the 2 for $49 sports bras.  My first purchase did not have adjustable straps.  The waist elastic actually sits quite low too.  I loved the back in both look and comfort, as opposed to the common racer back cut sports bras.  They actually fit quite well.  (I own the hot pink, teal with neon yellow accents, and pink and white horizontal stripe colors.)

Next I bought one with thin adjustable straps during a semi-annual sale.  It does tend to reveal some cleavage while teaching my PiYo classes.  This one is tight enough to do it's job!  (I own the black and checkered ingram pattern, orchid, and neon orange colors.)

Victoria's Secret the Player Cami sports bra (minimum support)                                                   (photo courtesy of www.victoriassecret.com)

I ordered this next one thinking the hooks along the bottom front would be ideal instead of fighting to get a sweaty sports bra over my head each night.   The sizing is the same as a bra size which gives many more options!  I loved that it would give me a shape without flattening too!  I couldn't wait to get it in the mail to try on so I could order even more! It was a disappointment.  It was so hard to get the material over my head before wrapping the sides around to hook, and then I couldn't see where the hooks went after getting that far.  Taking it off and on every time would be too time consuming, and I might have pulled an arm muscle while trying.

Victoria's Secret Ultimate Cross-Train Sports Bra (Maximum support)(photo courtesy of www.victoriassecret.com)
Thumbs Down!

Luckily I had also ordered the Ultimate (not cross-train).  The straps can be crossed in the back, or stand horizontal like a regular bra.  In other words, It can be put on like a regular bar, totally avoiding any over the head struggling!  It has plastic underwire, giving me a shape.  No more pancakes!  This style is also ordered according to bra size and not S,M, L.  The straps aren't as thin as the Cami above, so the added support is great!  My one pet peeve was that the cups didn't fit super snug against my skin, so I would have to size down in cup size but since they didn't have my size so I don't own the style below.

I instead exchanged it for the Angel.  It is the same look as the Ultimate pictured above but has a double strap cross-back and no option for classic strap.  The plastic under wire gives a beautiful shape, but it is hard to get on and off.  You can't have it all! (I own the heather-ed purple color and neon orange.)

I recently visited the store to try the front-zip, which sounded up my alley!
The big debate here is the Incredible vs the Knockout.

Victoria Secret Sport Incredible Front Close             Victoria Secret Sport Knockout Front-Close
                                       (photos courtesy of www.victoriassecret.com)

Surprisingly, there were enough things that I loved that I got both, but I wanted to list out the facts when comparing for you to be aware:
-Knockout and Incredible     Has under wire!
-Knockout and Incredible     No over head struggle!
-Knockout     Has built in cups that clasp in the front that is covered by the front zip
-Incredible    Has a hook and eye close and also zipper. (The hook and eye just gets in the way and is unnecessary, can't even be fastened, and makes it hard to zip the zipper up or down if hooked closed.) It does have a V neck for even better shape!
-Knockout    I did some yoga moves in the dressing room and I felt an irritating seam rubbing me wrong on my back but the worst part was the front close plastic clip rubbed a bone felt a little tighter to inhale.
-Incredible   The straps are a little too thick!  They dug into my collarbone tightly when I raised my   arms, and twisted on the metal clips, made loud creaking sounds, but I could inhale, and I would probably not notice when not focusing on it.
Ugh doesn't anyone test these things out before mass production?

Either way, I still absolutely loved the way I was held in and really loved the shape they gave me so I got the dark charcoal gray Incredible, and the employee ordered the Knockout front-close in ink blot/neon yellow/black colorblock!
(That color has multi strap back and the others in the Knockout style have racerback).
I don't know why they don't call it something else to lessen the confusion!

Investing in sports bras that fit and are of good quality body-wick nylon is worth your money!
Just months ago, I would have thought this was ludicrous!
"Y'all gon make me loose my mind, up in here, up in here."
Wait, that's DMX, not Ludacris.
"1, 2 meet me outside."

These are items that don't hold onto stench, and can handle a good amount of wear and tear from washing!  I recommend to those who workout 4+ times a week.

While on the subject, you can see that undergarments are no laughing matter.  In Target, I did pick up a few things more recently, but different from the ones I originally spoke about that didn't work for my body type.  This is a more stretchy material and can be layered, or worn on lower impact days. Most importantly are the cotton lined seamless undies I found 3 for $10. There are perfect to wear under my leggings because I don't feel them, but have an extra layer.  These are no hassle, no lines can be seen, and they stay in place!

Don't we all love Carrie Underwood?

Whether we envy her voice, her legs, or her hair, Carrie Underwood is a likable girl and a likable entertainer.  She launched her own line of fitness attire in just this month, and I anxiously awaited its arrival!

Women's Effortless Dip DyeCocoon Sweater $79
&
Mixed Open Knit Scarf $35
What I like about it is that she chose practical pieces that can be worn the entire day, before & after your workout  It looks comfortable and stylish, and her color choices were spot on.  this ombre sweater with scarf is cute and realistic to be thrown on while getting to the gym!

Women's Essential Tight Fit Capris Printed in Classical Flower $68

The print is fun and different!  I was going to order a piece the day of her launch, but the prices were unfortunately higher than I expected.  I'm picky about my workout clothing anyway, so at that price, it would have a lot to live up to!  I knew it was also sold at Dick's Sporting Goods, a store I never go to, but I went last week, after my Ulta run, since it's next door to my Ulta.  The quality was impressive!  The thickness, and craftsmanship surprised me in a good way!  Her accessories and matching options were just my style!

Once Dick's offers a coupon, I already have a few pieces in mind I'd love to add to my fitness wardrobe!

Calia Studio pieces can be purchased in the 2 following links:

Chia Seed Pudding with Protein Powder

About a year and a half ago I started focusing more on fitness and my workouts.  I did a lot of research and started to incorporate protein powder into my diet.  Having enough protein in your diet helps ensure your body is able to create muscle and when you are on a diet it also helps you feel fuller longer.  I like protein powder smoothies and all but I also looked for ways to change it up.  I tried a couple recipes for protein powder pancakes which are pretty good.  I added protein to my morning oatmeal and also froze blended protein powder and coconut milk into popsicles for the summer.

My youngest daughter is plagued with food allergies.  I often find myself trying to make alternate treats that she can enjoy that still resemble what everyone else was eating.  My older daughter wanted pudding so I searched for an option that accommodated my youngest daughter.  Chia seed pudding came up on Google.  The first recipe that I tried was fantastic!  It is a recipe by a blogger named Aimee and her blog is called Simple Bites.  It can be found here.  Her Simple Chia Seed pudding is delicious, easily adaptable to taste and dietary needs, and has several options for flavors and garnishes.  The recipe is super simple and uses just four ingredients.  The link for her recipe is here and I used it with permission.  Thanks, Aimee!

Here is the recipe and instructions from The Simple Bites blog:
Ingredients
  • 1/3 cup white chia seeds
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
Instructions
  1. Combine all the ingredients in a pint jar. Cover the jar with a lid and give it a vigorous shake.
  2. Chill for about an hour, then return to the jar and shake it up. Let chill for at least 4 hours and overnight is even better.
  3. Chia seeds will expand and turn into pudding the consistency of applesauce (it won't get really thick).
  4. Serve cold with sliced fruit or toasted nuts on top.

Now, back to the protein powder.  After I made this a few times I started adding about a half scoop of protein powder to it.  I use a vegan chocolate protein powder which flavors the pudding to a yummy chocolate.  It's delicious, healthy, and kid approved!  You can try adding your favorite protein powder in as well.  If you are looking for ways to add more protein to your diet, cure a sweet tooth, or make a healthier version of traditional pudding, then this recipe is definitely for you!  I eat chia seed protein pudding rather than a protein smoothie sometimes.  It also works as a dip for fruit, to dress up oatmeal, and in a tupperware container as a snack on the run.

Let me know if you try out this recipe and what you think!  I would love to hear from you!

Best Workout Pants Ever

Exercise clothes have come a long way since Olivia Newton John's "Let's Get Physical" video with  80's hi cut leotards with leg warmers, or white slouch socks and Jazzercise sneakers.  That doesn't mean functional workout clothes are easy to come by!  Cute matchy matchy workout clothes are sold all over, but they don't last very long!  They stretch out before the day is done, let along the quality change after a few washes.

I have gotten very critical in regards to what I wear to workout.  I can't have the distraction of being self conscious while squatting and lifting weights, or bending over in a downward dog covered in sweat.  I want to focus on form, and not wonder if my undies are showing!  I have tried many brands that people suggest, but I found my all time favorite workout pants.  They compress and breathe at the same time, they stay in place, and don't stretch bigger as the day goes on.  The full length are my favorite and do not shrink up throughout the day!   Compression is my friend when I hit the gym, and these compress to the max! I find them to fit true to size.

First place goes to KNOCKOUT BY VICTORIA'S SECRET TIGHT!

The fit is just perfect!  They do not ever slide down revealing the bum.  Workout pants are only comfortable to me if I don't have to keep adjusting the back!  I can squat with pride haha! They offer solid colors, but I prefer fun prints while I workout!  They offer full length, capri, cropped, high waist, and stirrup.  The full length doesn't ride up and become too short.  The capris and cropped are no looser or thinner in material than the full length either.  The stores seem to run out of variety quickly and I find that online has a bigger selection of KNOCKOUT leggings!

knockout capri

I also purchased the stirrup tights online after trying them on during the semi-annual sale, and regretfully did not purchase and they were sold out next visit.  You snooze, you loose.  They are a silky shinier material and super stylish if you ask me!  Thankfully, they were available online!

The stirupps are great for PiYo workouts!
They can also be worn without the stirrup and it just looks like a cute cutout if even noticeable!

I did happen to find some by Victoria Secret's PINK line during the semi-annual sale and they fit quite similarly.
(cheetah are PINK, 2 prints are KNOCKOUT)

Confidence takes you far in life, and the fit of these gives me a take charge attitude because I have no fear of ill fitting problems sneaking up on me, going unnoticed until a friend stares at a weird area, causing me to look down and realize my stomach has been sticking out the whole time I've been walking around Target after the gym!  When you feel better you do more, and when you look good you're less likely to skip your workout so awww snap!  SO many logical reasons to justify my owning so many pairs of these wonderful wicking fabric specimens.  Can there really be too much of a good thing?  Nah, especially when they get full of sweat every day!  Must stay fresh and clean!  A girl needs options.

A close second are Gap Body pants, with a similar fit, although I have only tried the capri length.  Next on my list to try:  Lorna Jane, Lululemon, and Athletica

KNOCKOUT tights can be found at www.victoriassecret.com  Reach out to me on twitter or facebook if you decide to try out this style of leggings!  I'd love to hear about your picks!

Nike Studio Wraps & PiYo

If I haven't given you enough hints in a few of my posts about over-the-knee boots, I will tell you straight out that I LOVE shoes!  I love them enough that I found a pair to wear when most people go barefoot!

I'm talkin' about during yoga!  Namaste.
I prefer a more upbeat workout, with music pumping, like PiYo!
PiYo is a low-impact, high-intensity body-transformation program that uses the most effective pilates-and yoga-inspired moves to sculpt long, lean muscles and burn fat.
I like to call it Yoga for Rebels!

Despite the name, it's SO much more than just yoga and pilates.
PiYo is full of dynamic flowing movements.  It's faster than yoga, but you will notice a few yoga and pilates moves throughout.
What I like about it is I don't have to be a treadmill bunny in the  morning, and then still have to fit in my toning moves later in the day.  It works on sculpting muscles using my own body weight, so I don't  need equipment, and I also burn calories and break a sweat since I'm moving the whole time!  When I'm moving non-stop instead of holding static poses, my heart rate stays up and I get both my cardio and weight training workout out of the way in one good hour.

Back to my new shoe find!  Form is of utmost importance during PiYo because to shape my muscle tone, I have to concentrate on my core and my limbs, and can't be sticking to a floor in sneakers or sliding on my bare feet.
If you are into Yoga or PiYo I recommend Nike Studio Wraps!  They prevent slipping, but allow for movement.  I use them on a sticky yoga mat, and off as well!  Let's talk comfort!  I thought I would be bothered by the fabric between my toes, but I don't even feel it!  They are a perfect fit, and run true to size.  They provide protection from the cold dirty studio floor, and from dirt and germs, and are easy to bring to and from class when stored in the cute bag included with purchase that I wrap around my wrist.  I give them five stars!

Everyone comments on how cute they are too!  They come in a variety of colors, and some come with an ankle wrap for added support, and ballet flats or now boots to wear over them while going to and from class.

a shot of me doing PiYo wearing my Nike Studio Wraps

PiYo Live class is by far my favorite class at the gym.
The energy in a room with good music just pushes me harder!
The class shows a glimpse of all of the moves featured in the PiYo home DVDs.
It's always harder than most people think, but everyone loves it and comes back for more, both men and women! Try something new!  You might be surprised!
To find a PiYo Live class in your area:

Michelle and I snapped a sweaty selfie after taking PiYo together!

PiYo also has a home version, which can be ordered HERE!
(Click 'fitness programs' on left, & for best results I recommend the PiYo Challenge Pack!)

PiYo is for beginners up to elite athletes.  You can go at your own pace, and there is a modifier shown the entire workout on the dvds.  Your instructor will show modifications during class as well!  It comes with 8 workouts 25-45 mins. each.
Everyone can improve their flexibility and balance, and PiYo is geared toward flexibility.
I noticed being more flexible in my hip flexors, which is a part I never really stretched before PiYo, has helped my knee pain.  It has helped rehabilitation after injury, and runners love it since improving flexibility adds to their speed and agility.  My triceps, shoulders, and core have toned up and have noticeable increased strength after PiYo.  I recommend it!

As for my stylish Nike Studio Wraps, I find if I work out in style, I'm less inclined to miss a workout!

The Nike Studio Wraps can be purchased HERE!

Nu-go Protein Bars

Nine times out of ten, you will find a Quest bar in my car's center console and in my purse! I'm a Quest bar fan, and they were my go to snack in a time crunch, or when out and about and trying to avoid a less healthy choice!  Then my youtube friend Chelsea Garay mentioned Nu-go bars!  I like variety, and heard the words caramel pretzel, and had to try them!  I have only tried one flavor, and am anxious to try more!  It's high in calories for my liking, but for guaranteed protein intake, and a gluten free, non-gmo, rBGH-free snack, I will definitely be repurchasing these delicious bars!  The taste has the perfect saltiness and reminds me of my other favorite treats, Starbuck's Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate and Talenti's Salted Caramel gelato.  It's a good alternative to packing countless Quest bars when I travel, so I welcome this delicious snack!  What are your favorite protein bars?

Shout out to follow blogger and youtuber Chelsea for recommending them!

Pampering your pits

In an attempt to start switching my cosmetics over to chemical free brands, I started with my pits last year!  I started at Sephora, and for $14 purchased The Healthy Deodorant by Lavanila laboratories (vanilla lavender), 100% natural with no aluminum and no parabens.  It definately kept me smelling fresh.  I wasn't fond of the smell of the deodorant, but it worked!  What it didn't do was keep me from sweating!  Pit stained shirts are no good, even if I didn't stink!

Next I ordered Primal Pit Paste, organic all natural, in 3 sample sized containers, Unscented Strong, Lavender Regular, Kids in Orange Creamsicle.  Primal Pit Paste runs about $10 for full size and comes in a stick, but I tried the containers with wooden spatulas.  Since it is high in baking soda, I got a rash with each use.  Otherwise it worked well, but wasn't right for my body. They now offer a pump spray deodorant I would like to try though.

My favorite, which I have repurchased is Schmidt's natural deodorant (fragrance free)!  Although it is not an antiperspirant, the plant powders keep me dry and odor free.  Schmidt's comes with a tiny plastic spatula.  Say what?  The mini spatula is used to scrape off some product, and I use my fingers to apply a pea-sized amount.  I thought this would deter my repurchase, but now it's part of my routine, and just adds an extra finger washing to my morning routine (shower, apply lotion, rinse fingers, add deodorant, wash fingers with soap, brush teeth, do my make-up..no biggie)!  I held onto my normal drugstore deodorants to use in a rush, but I haven't touched them since trying Schmidt's.  Schmidt's has been my favorite deodorant, and I even scooped some into a little plastic container to travel with, since the large size is glass!  Schimdt's is thicker than the Primal Pit Paste and needs your body heat to melt and rub on, as opposed to the thinner Primal Pit Paste, which doesn't even need the spatula.  The Schmidt's consistency is like Coconut Manna (coconut butter) if you are familiar, and you need to scrape it before picking up the daily amount with your fingers.   I'd love to try some other 'flavors' of Schmidt's, but since the containers are quite large, I'll stick with what I like!  Schmidt's Fragrance Free is my go-to deodorant, and I haven no reason to try others or change brands in the future. Schmidt's retails for $9, but I always seem to find a promo code available!

Leave a comment on your experiences with chemical free products you love!

SHAKEOLOGY: Shake, shake, shake, shake your booty

Have you heard about Shakeology?  What's all the rage about anyway?

So I heard about it early last year, but I didn't find it necessary because I was making fruit smoothies in my blender anyway.  I was so wrong!  I'd do strawberry, banana, greek yogurt, and maybe spinach or kale.  I pretty much ate about 2 servings of vegetables a day.  I definitely was not getting the nutrients my body needed to keep my metabolism going, and keep my organs running optimally!  I thought I would try the Shakeology variety pack, and bought the 24 serving variety pack which had chocolate, vanilla, & strawberry packets, so I could see which one I liked!  I ordered the Home Direct package, which ships you a new bag (or packets) monthly so you don't run out.  I only did this to get the lower price, & since ordering guarantees you a 30 day money back guarantee even with an empty bag, I figured I'd give it about 2 good months and cancel before the next month's could be shipped.  I was told to try it for 3-4 weeks to really feel the difference.
I felt fine, so I sorta rolled my eyes.
This isn't a shake with water type of shake.   I blended almond milk, fruit and ice.
I made them really thick with a lot of ice, so it was like a milk shake!
I made chocolate peanut butter cup, chocolate banana, chocolate strawberry, then I tried vanilla blueberry, vanilla mocha, orange creamsicle, snickerdoodle, pineapple coconut, then strawberry banana, strawberry blueberry, and before I knew it I only had a handful of packets left.

That's when it happened!  I felt the change!  I felt the extra energy it gave me!
I didn't  have anymore afternoon crashes when I was sitting at my desk around 2 or 3pm.  I didn't NEED a snack between breakfast and lunch when I had my Shakeology for breakfast, and my stomach didn't growl out of hunger.  Shakeology held me over until noon even!  Some days, I drank it at 3pm, or post workout in the evening.  I have a sweet tooth so whenever I really craved ice cream, I'd make a chocolate peanut butter banana Shakeology instead.

Shakeology is more than just a meal replacement,
and here's a breakdown of what makes it so Ultra Premium:
*increases energy
*reduces junk food cravings
*improves digestion and regularity
*helps with weight loss

Shakeology is not just a protein shake.  It is more than a meal replacement!  It contains antioxidants, and probiotics!  It is not like those other ones out there.  It's the smartest calories you can put into your body! A lot of shakes are just made for protein, and other meal replacements have artificial flavorings and chemicals.   The fact that I pack Shakeology and a mini blender in my suitcase every time I travel, even when that means I have room for 1 less pair of shoes, proves how much I love it!

packing list:  snorkel....check!  Shakeology....check!

It contains 70+ vitamins and super foods!  It is my Daily Dose of Dense Nutrition!

Who doesn't love to feel energetic, fit, and fabulous?

I have had Shakeology every day for 8 months!
Needless to say, I never cancelled, and now get the 30 day bag supply.
It also comes in Vegan Chocolate & Vegan Tropical Strawberry.
It costs $3-4 a day, which is a small price to pay to feel energetic enough to do the things I used to be too tired to do, and know I'm keeping my body healthy!
Shakeology actually saves me money because it saves on snacks and has replaced my multi-vitamin too.  It's still just part of my grocery budget, since I took out all those boxes of 6 granola bars and crackers here, and multivitamins and Vitamin C there, because I don't need those things anymore with the 70+vitamins and exotic super foods that my body needs that are already in my daily Shakeology.  Shakeology is priceless to me because I know I just don't have the time or money to cook plate after plate of vegetables!  I blend and I'm out the door!

I would only suggest something I truly love!
Even my family switched from morning chocolate and powdered donuts to Shakeology for breakfast and don't miss a day!

The value it brought to me is not something I ever expected!
With a 30 day money back guarantee, ya got nothing to lose, except maybe a few pounds!

Plantar Fasciitis Is Cramping My Style

I wouldn't say that I am a fitness expert by any means; however, I do work out regularly and eat a fairly healthy diet.  My workouts include cardio, weight training, yoga, zumba, ballet, and occasionally PIYO.  For me, cardio is usually 20-30 minutes on the elliptical or a flat run on the treadmill.  In October I started experiencing pain in the arch of my right foot.  I thought maybe I pulled a muscle or something at ballet and didn't think much of it.  After a couple of weeks the pain was not any better. In fact, it was worse and my left foot was also starting to hurt sometimes too.  By that time, my right foot constantly ached and even had a hot, burning pain sometimes. I was being kept awake at night because of the pain in my foot!  Finally during a ballet class, one of my dancer friends, who happens to be a physical therapist, looked at it and said it was plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis is basically pain and inflammation of one or both feet due to an overtight calf muscle or overtight calves.  All I know is that it was hurting and I was quite happy to have avoided seeing my doctor for a diagnosis and treatment directions.  My friend said to start wearing an arch support, ice it several times a day, stretch my calves two to three times a day and roll the arch of my foot on a tennis ball to massage it. She suggested taking a break from running, the elliptical, and jumping. She also said that I needed to wear flat shoes and not heels.

I took her advice and after four or five days I noticed an improvement.  I was icing my foot at least two times each day, wearing flat shoes, wearing my arch support brace and stretching my calves as often as I could.  People kind of looked at me funny as I took a quick break in the Target parking lot to lower my heels off the curb to stretch my calves out but I didn't mind.  Sometimes a girl just has to stretch and my calves thanked me.

Within a couple of weeks I was not having nearly as much pain.  Going to ballet still hurt but nothing could keep me away from ballet!  I missed zumba and running but focused on letting my body heal.  I credit the brace with most of my recovery.  I can definitely feel a difference when I am not wearing it.
Here's a picture of me wearing it:
It's very comfortable and not bulky at all.  Luckily since its cold outside the brace is always covered with a sock or shoe.  And one of the best things about this whole debacle was that I got to buy new flat boots and a pair of new running shoes.  I obviously needed new boots so I had a stylish alternative to sneakers.  I got a new pair of running shoes to replace an old pair with a lot of wear.  I need more support than those shoes were able to still give.

It's been a couple of months now and I am definitely feeling better.  I am now able to do some cardio without pain but I do still ice my calves after I do zumba or running.  I also still frequently stretch my calves because when I don't my foot definitely hurts later.  I have worn heels for a few hours at a time on several occassions too- yay!  So there is definitely improvement but I have a feeling it will be an ongoing issue for that I deal with for awhile.  Anyone else dealt with plantar fasciitis or tight calves?  Any tips?  Leave a comment and let me know about any injuries you have worked with.

Dance Fitness by Jessica

I'm a Mom.  And as a Mom, I always have way too many things to do, than I have time to do them!  Fitness is a priority in my life and I am always looking for ways to squeeze in exercise.  One of my Mom groups on Facebook was discussing this very topic and several Moms recommended Dance Fitness by Jessica videos on Youtube.  I love dance and so I checked out the videos.  They are approximately 4-5 minutes each, just the length of one radio song, and there are several available.  They each have over one hundred thousand views!  Each routine is a combination of dance, zumba moves, and calisthetics like squats.  The first one I tried was to “Dark Horse” by Katy Perry.  In the Dark Horse routine you do deep squats, abdominal rolls, kicks, and more squats.  By three minutes in I could feel my heart pumping and my thighs were definitely feeling it.  Aside from “Dark Horse,” I also like “Fireball" by Pitbull and “Na Na” by Trey Songz.  I’m hooked!  Just 3 of Jessica’s videos give my legs a decent workout in approximately 15 minutes.  They are fun to do and I haven’t become bored of them.  I highly recommend trying them out.  You can view them on Jessica’s Youtube Channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/FitnesswithJessica.  You can follow her on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Dancefitnesswithjessica and she has a workout DVD available on Amazon.com.

Sieze The Day and Try Ballet

This morning I seized the day! Carpe diem!  I took an adult ballet class today!  I love all types of dance but ballet is probably my favorite.  Did you know that ballet is the foundation of all dance and furthermore, many athletes take ballet classes?  From an athletic standpoint, ballet helps with strength, flexibility, and body awareness.  Conversely, from a personal growth view, ballet also helps with poise, grace, and memory.
I haven't taken a ballet class since I graduated high school *ahem* ten years ago (ok, really 14 but don't tell!) and I have always wanted to do back.  Today I did.  It was awesome!  Sure, I had fun and loved the dancing, but my hip flexors and thighs are still shaking from exertion over an hour later.
If you have never taken a ballet class then you should know that they are all basically consist of the same things.  First, there is a warm up with exercises completed at the barre.  These exercises not only warm up your muscles but work your flexibility.  The barre work increases in difficulty as the class progresses and works your leg muscles to lengthen and stretch them. After the barre work there will be dance steps in the center of the room.  Turns and jumps are usually practiced next,  Finally there will be a combination of steps and jumps set to music.  The combination will be several stanzas long and challenges a dancers memory too.
Even if you aren't graceful, or don't feel graceful, ballet is a good workout.  I recommend trying it if you never have.  Step out of your comfort zone!

Yoga Pant Evolution

There are a lot of girls who wake up and put on yoga pants.  They might own one pair or multiple pairs, but they are worn...a lot, with no intention of doing any yoga.  Who cares, they’re super comfy!

That was then, and I have since changed my tune, initially because my yoga pants shrunk up, and I went from adorable comfy girl in a pony, to dork with short pants that faded to a grayish black that made her butt look bigger.  Now I wake up and put on actual running leggings, also known as, workout pants!  I started doing this, so I would have one less excuse not to workout or go to the gym.  It’s worked for me so far!  There are some days I don't do anything, but most days it’s one less step to getting into the gym, all because of one comment.  My neighbor once asked me if I had come from the gym, and I said," no, these pants are just really stretchy.”  The look that precluded left me in such embarrassment that I convinced myself if I had the clothes on, I had to have either just gone or are going to the gym.  They say if you think something enough, it will take place, so yoga pants led me to the power of the Secret by Rhonda Byrne, or the movie Field of Dreams, “if you build it, it will come."  Whatever your take, yoga pants have revolutionized my every day because that comfort led me to buy my first pair of non yoga workout pants.  All of my yoga pants shrunk anyway hitting above the ankle bone, and with the flare that looks so great on tall models, I felt like Jan Brady in Cindy’s pants after Alice mixed up the wash.  Hence, black leggings were purchased, and eventually runner's leggings.  I won’t use the word spandex, but my stretch pants, aka leggings, are tight at the ankle, and the short capri version is in style too, so raise your protein shake to my revolutionized style of yoga pants!
(We will save men's gym wear for another day!)

The more I wore my workout attire, the more I went to the gym.  I mean getting there is the hardest part!  The more I went to the gym or did my fitness videos in my family room, the more it became a definite in my routine.  Just as I have tripped at work from my heels getting stuck in my pant cuff, I have also tripped on a treadmill from the toe of my sneaker getting caught on the bottom of my yoga pants.  Also, gym-goers know you can’t wear a baggy shirt because the loose fabric gets all stuck when trying to move weights and then my earphones fall out, and I just end up giving up and leaving all because of a wardrobe malfunction due to my boyfriend's t-shirt.   Who am I kidding, MY xl t-shirt.  So the fitted clothes won, plus I didn't want to look frumpy in baggy gym clothes all day.  That only looks cute on high school girls who just came from practice and make calf high socks with adidas grandpa sandals look cool.  I decided to start matching my shirts and shoes to my non yoga pants.  Now that I walk around in matching spandex, NO I didn't just admit to wearing spandex, I mean matching trendy workout gear, I can't wait to get to the gym!  I no longer can say, I can’t go out, I’m still in my yoga pants.  What I SHOULD do is pass out my shrunken used-to-be-black yoga pants outside of Wal-mart as a complimentary gift.  That’s how much I no longer miss my yoga pants.  I used to think I couldn’t wear clothes specifically made for working out because they would push in and give me a muffin top , but to my surprise, they suction me in many inches, if I get the right material that is!  I still have the pair I just had to have, but when I bend down to pick up a weight, they boomerang down and  I have to keep touching my butt to check and see if they fell off yet.  They are so comfy, I wouldn’t know if they did!  Now I know, the tigher the better!  (I just pull them way up over the muffin top.)  Problem solved, until I pick up that weight and they slide down and I become self-conscious of a role, but my hands are full, so I try to do a rep, suck in, do a rep, suck in.  No that doesn't work.  You can’t suck in while lifting.  It’s like peeing and sneezing.  You just can’t!

All in all, my days of matching velour track suits evolved to yoga pants and tees,  then to workout pants and tanks.  Who knows what's in store next!

Actually the pros have been sportin' some one piece leotards as they workout.  There's no way!  Although they do say, “dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” Hmmm...
